The 25 Prophets: (8) IS'HAAQ (AS) (ISAAC)

ISHAAQ (AS) (ISAAC)

lshaaq (AS) is the second son of Ibrahim (AS), and his mother was Sarah. He was born five years after his brother Ismail (AS). The Angels who were sent to Sodom to the people of Luut (AS) passed by Ibrahim (AS) and gave him and his wife the good news that they would get a child.

These Angels came in the shape of humans, and as they entered they greeted him saying "Salaam" (peace); he answered "Salaam." He then hastened to entertain them, and he brought to them a roasted calf. But when he saw their hands would not reach for the meal he got scared of them and suspected them of not being honest men.

They said: "Fear not, we have been sent against the people of Lut, and to give you and your wife Sarah the good news that you will get a child (Ishaaq) and after that a grandson Yaakub (Jacob), and that you will become grandparents while you are still alive."

His wife was standing there serving them, and when she heard this she laughed and said: "Alas! Shall I bear a child seeing I am an old woman, and my husband here is an old man? That indeed would be a wonderful thing!"
The angels said: "Do you wonder at God's decree? The grace of God and His blessings on you, 0 you people of the house! For He is indeed worthy of praise and full of all glory!"

Ishaaq (AS) has only been mentioned in the Holy Quraan with the news of his coming. He married Rifqat bint Nahour his cousin, the daughter of his paternal uncle, and at the age of sixty he had two sons who were twins and named them of Ays and Yaakub. He prayed for Yaakub (AS) to be a guardian to his brothers and his people, and also prayed for him to become a Prophet. For Ays he prayed to be graced with nobility together with his offspring.

Ishaaq (AS) lived to the age of one hundred and seventy five. He was buried near his father's grave in Al-Khalil, Palestine that is eighteen miles from Baitil-Maqdis (Al-Quds). Their graves are still there to be seen in Masjid Ibrahim.
