Presented is a series of
readings on the Ibadhi thought intended to encourage respected readers to study
and reflect upon its crucial aspects so that they won’t be driven by any
psychological motives or inherent influences which might hinder them from
declaring and accepting the Truth.
All praise is due to Allah and
may His blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammed and his companions. Sheikh Ahmed
bin Hamed Al Khalili- may Allah keep and protect him- says in a seminar of
Islamic Jurisdiction:
'In the Name of Allah, Most
Merciful, Most Gracious. All praise is due to Allah and may His blessings be
upon our prophet and whosoever follow him.
One of God’s blessings bestowed
on us is granting us this meeting under the shadow of Islam and on the table of
the great Jurisdiction which originates from the Holy Qur’an, the Prophet’s
(peace be upon him) traditions, and the ancestors of which Prophet’s companions
come first and are the best of all. Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him)
testifies that based on Allah’s praise to them in the verse “Mohammed is the
Messenger of Allah. And those who are with him are severe against disbelievers,
and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing, falling down prostrate (in
prayer), seeking bounty from Allah and God pleasure. The mark of them is on
their faces from the traces of prostration. This is their description in the
Torah. But their description in the Gospel is like a seed which sends forth its
shoot, then makes it strong and becomes thick and stands straight on its stem,
delighting the sowers, that He may enrage the disbelievers with them. Allah has
promised those among them who believe and do righteous good deeds, forgiveness
and a mighty reward.”
Allah praises them in a number
of verses. They deserve to be models and deserve honor. Scholars of our decent
ancestors testify that the Prophet’s companions are of the greatest position
and highest honor after the Messengers (peace be upon them). Imam Nouraddeen Al
Salimi says: “Undoubtedly, the Prophet’s companions are the most honored
people after the Messengers.”
One of our scholars narrates in
the 13th Hijri decade- Sheikh Nasser Bin Nabhan taken this from the Imam Abi
Ya’qoub Yusuf Bin Ibrahim Al Warjalani (the man of justice and fairness) says:
“Whatsoever revealed to the Prophet is important, whatsoever done by the
Prophet’s companions should be follow and as for the followers, they are men
and we are different men.” This of course entails respect to followers as they
have honor since they are friends of the Prophet’s companions. However, much is
to be said about followers and scholars have disputes on whether to follow the
followers. Scholars are also different on whether to apply what the Prophet’s
companions or not. Some such as Ibn Baraka (from Oman lived in the 4th decade)
state that we must and states “Seekers of Truth should apply the companions’
deeds.”
Anyways, reliance should be on
the Qur’an, and Sunnah. The Prophet’s companions are the most knowledgeable
people on the purposes of Qur’an and Prophet’s traditions on elucidating the
Qur’an, clarifying its gist or introducing new rulings the Qur’an hasn’t
directly stated.'
