"Look for Something, Even if It is Only an Iron Ring."

Abu Obeida reported from Jabir ibn Zaid that Ibn Abbas said: "A woman came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said to him, "I have given myself to you." He kept silence for a long time, and then a man said to him, "O Messenger of Allah! Marry her to me if you have no need of her." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "Do you have anything to give her as a dowry?" He said, "I possess only this Izar (lower garment) of mine." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "If you give her your Izar, you will sit while you have no Izar, so look for something else." He said, "I do not find anything." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "Look for something, even if it is only an iron ring." The man looked, but he did not find anything. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "Do you have any Qur'an (memorized)?" He said, "I have such Sura and such Sura," naming those Suras . So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, "I marry her to you for what you have (memorized) of the Qur'an."
