Learn the Ibadhi Prayer

Salaah (Prayer) is the second pillar of Islam and is the most important one of all. It is the pillar of religion, hence whoever neglects it verily destroys religion and is not a believer. Performing Salaah five times a day is mandatory for every able and mature Muslim. It energizes your life and nourishes your soul and this help you to fight all Satanic temptations to do evil.
"Surely prayer restrains from indecent and evil acts And the remembrance of Allah is surely greater, and Allah knows what you do."[29:45]

The objective of this concise topic is to explain how Ibadhi perform Salaah according to Prophet Mohammed B saying: "Pray as you have seen me praying". Hadith related by Bukhari.

The main points of difference between Ibadhi School and other Islamic schools - in the subject of Salah- can be summarized as follows:
1) The Ibadhis hold that there is no raising of the hands in the opening Takbeer or at any other time in the prayer.
2) The Ibadhis hold that only the opening chapter of the Quran (Al-Fatiha) is to be recited in the Dhuhr and Asr prayers.
3) The Ibadhi scholars reject Qunut and hold that those prayers said with the Imam who performs Qunut are futile and should be offered again.
4) The Ibadhis do not say "Ameen" after reciting Al-Fatiha during prayers.
5) The fifth point of difference is about prayers during travel (Salaat al-Safar).There is a number of items on which Ibadhis differ from some or all other Sunni schools.
Please refer to the book "Studies in Ibadhism" pages 92-94 for more details.

How to perform Salah according to Ibadhi Madhhab?
Having cleansed yourself by Wudhu (ablution), you may proceed to perform Salaah (prayer). Wudhu is a ritual cleansing.

Note: By way of an example, the performance of Salaat Al-Fajr (The Dawn Prayer) will be illustrated.
Salaat Al-Fajr has got two rak'as and each of them requires another sura in addition to Al-Fatiha.

When you have stood facing the direction of the Ka'ba (Al-qibla) ready for prayer you are first required to carry out the following three steps in succession before pronouncing the Takbeerat al-Ihram: Make the Neyyah (intention), recite the Iqamah (call for beginning of prayer) and say the Tawjeeh (orientation).

The intention is the desire to pray. This is done in the heart.

The Iqamah (this is recited by everyone when praying alone), and is as follows:

·        Women are not required to recite the Iqamah.
For Qiyam (standing):
·        The worshipper must stand up straight looking downwards to the place where he will prostrate.
·        The fingers of his feet must be pointing towards the Qibla.
·        Keep his hands on either side of the body, not on the navel or breast.
·        The fingers of his hands should be pointing towards the ground.

     The Tawjeeh (Orientation)

SUBHANAKA ALLAHUMMA WA BIHAMDIKA TABAARAKA SMUKA WA TAALA JADDUKA WA LAA ILLAAHA GHAYRUKA INNIY WAJJAHTU WAJHIYA LILLADHIY FATARA SSAMAAWATI WAL-ARDHA HANIFAN WA MA ANA MINAL-MUSHRIKIYN.

After the last three steps being carried out successively, the next sequence of actions will be as follows:

Entry into the prayer by pronouncing the Takbeerat Al-Ihram "ALLAHU AKBAR", seeking God's protection from the Devil (Al-Isti'adha), and recitation of Al-Fatiha followed by recitation of another sura:

The following video is showing how to perform 2 raka'a according to Ibadhi Madhhab.

·        Al-Fajr Prayer has got two rak'as and each of them requires another sura in addition to Al-Fatiha.
·        Al-Dhuhr Prayer has got four rak'as and each of them requires Al-Fatiha only.
·        Al-Asr Prayer has got four rak'as and each of them requires Al-Fatiha only.
·        Al-Maghrib Prayer has got three rak'as. It requires Al-Fatiha and another Surah in the first 2 rak'as and only Al-Fatiha in the last rak'a.
·        Al-Isha Prayer has got four rak'as. It requires Al-Fatiha and another Surah in the first 2 rak'as and only Al-Fatiha in the last 2 rak'as.

In case of a three Rak'as prayer as that of Maghrib prayer, or a four Rak'as prayer like that of noon prayer (Dhuhr), Asr prayer (late afternoon prayer) or, Isha prayer (night prayer), the worshipper stands up after reciting the First Tashahud, and saying "ALLAHU AKBAR".
The worshipper recites only Al-Fatiha [taking into consideration when to recite sura after Al-Fatiha].
After the third Rak'a of Maghrib prayer, and the fourth Rak'a of Dhuhr, Asr and Isha prayers, the worshipper recites the Last Tashahud and terminates his prayers by saying: " AS'SALAAM ALAIKUM "  while turning first to the right, and second to the left saying: "WA RAHMATUL LLAH" as it has been explained before.

·        The First Tashuhud:
ATTAHIYATU LILAHI WA'SSALAWATU WA TTAYYIBATU, AS SALAMU ALAYKA AYYUHA NNABIYYU WA RAHMATU LLAHI WA BARAKATUH, AS'SALAMU ALAYNA WA ALAA IBADI LLAHI SSALIHIN, ASH'HADU AN'LA ILAHA ILLA LLAHU WA ASH'HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN ABDUHU WA RASULUHU.

·        The Last Tashahud:
ATTAHIYATU LILAHI WA'SSALAWATU WA TTAYYIBATU, AS SALAMU ALAYKA AYYUHA NNABIYYU WA RAHMATU LLAHI WA BARAKATUH, AS'SALAMU ALAYNA WA ALAA IBADI LLAHI SSALIHIN, ASH'HADU AN'LA ILAHA ILLA LLAHU WA ASH'HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN ABDUHU WA RASULUHU.
ALLAHUMMA SSALLI ALA MUHAMMAD WA ALAA AALI MUHAMMAD KAMA SALAYTA ALA IBRAHIM WA ALAA AALI IBRAHIM, WA BARIK ALAA MUHAMMAD WA ALAA AALI MUHAMMAD KAMA BARAKTA ALAA IBRAHIM WA ALAA AALI IBRAHIM FIL ALAMINA INNAKA HAMIDUN MAJIID.
"ALLAHUMMA INNII AUDHUBIKA MIN ADHABI JAHANAMA WA AUDHUBIKA MIN ADHABI L'QABRI WA AUDHUBIKA  MIN FITNATIL LMASIHI 'DAJJAAL WA AUDHBIKA MIN FITNATI LMAHYA WA LMAMATI.

The following video shows Salaat Al Maghrib by Sheikh Ahmed Al-Khalili; the Grand Mufti of Oman… I just love it!

At the end, remember that:
}قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ (١) ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ فِى صَلَاتِہِمۡ خَـٰشِعُونَ (٢){ (المؤمنون 1-2)
"Successful indeed are the believers. Those who offer their Salaah (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness" [23:1-2]

  2. Thank you for this brief discourse on Ibadhi prayers. I also concur with the anonymous above that this is great. However, you explained some main points of differences between Ibadhi School and other Islamic schools. I wonder why these points of difference come in schools while the Hadith related by Bukhari, states that Prophet Mohammed said: "Pray as you have seen me praying". Does this mean that one school (Sunni or ibadhi) has gone against the instruction of the Prophet? To make this query short, I feel that it would be very instructive if you had given some clues on Sunni and Ibadhi precise reasons for the difference from the Hadiths of the Prophet. I mean for example, what Hadith is depended by Ibadhi for keeping hands straight on either side of the body and one that led Sunni to fold them on the breast, etc.

Some of us simply go by available evidence from Hadith of the Prophet rather than by what schools cling on. For example, I personally don't care to abandon item in Sunni Salah for what Ibadh one, once I get convinced that there is what the Prophet did. Remember the Bukhari Hadith. Thank you.

  5. Assalamu Alaycom,

Ani@: I'm Ibadhi and as far as I know, the reason why we perform the prayer the way we do it, is the famous Hadith called in Arabic "Hadith almoussi'u ila salatih", in this Hadith the Prophet Mohammed PBUH describes the prayer step by step. Allah knows everything

    1. What you said is correct, in that Hadith the rafa ul yadain (i.e. raising of hands) in the beginning of Salah is not mentioned but, ameen, after Imam recites Fatihah is mentioned. Which would mean Ibadhi's only comply with a part of Hadith and reject the other. Secondly there are numerous Ahadith in which Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa aalihi was'sallam) performed rafa ul yadain in beginning of the prayers and even while entering into ruku and coming out of it.

  12. Assalamo Alaikum. I am a Pakistani Muslim man. I have only recently come to know about the Ibadi's way of living as a muslim. It is very astonishing for me to find that Ibadis match the most to what I believe. I cannot fit into Sunnis and Shias but nearly perfectly fit to Ibadi Muslim ideologies. I want to become a practicing Ibadi muslim. Please help me join an Ibadi community in Pakistan, if there is any. Please email me a kdervaish@gmail.com
